De-luxe limited (200 copies) edition  – facsimile after the original manuscript) + 2 vol. of studies.

The manuscript was created between 1688 and 1801 (113 years) and represents the chronicle of the Ljubljana society of St. Dizme. Each of the 195 members of this fraternity contributed its luxuriously decorated leaf with a emblem in which it was included on the top of the Latin rivers, a chosen German member’s name, in the middle of a personal or family coat of arms with a member’s life motto, the date of enrollment, and the subsequent year of death and, in some cases, some other comments. Over the years, 187 full-length illuminations have been accumulated, some of which have been supplemented with gilding. Other inscriptions in the memorial book are in German. The book is illustrated by at least twelve illuminators, but most of them are not known. Andrej Trost, Simon Tadej Volbenk Grahovar, Bartolomej Ramschissl and Matija Greyscher stand out among the well known. The only portrait is the image of Wolfgang Sigismund Künpach, but not included directly in Künpach’s presentation, but is placed at the beginning of the book; with this he was given special honor as the founder. Most of those enrolled do not have a curriculum vitae, since after the death of Janez Gregor Dolničar (l.1799), the first secretary of the company, his successors did not record the biographies of the deceased.
Via illuminations we can follow the development of fine arts, from rich baroque to light handball and ultimately to the language of enlightenment. Although it is not a book of emblems in the narrow sense of the word, but as a memorial book by the company of educators, the Ljubljana manuscript is also, on a global scale, one of the important monuments of emblematic.

A History of the Life and Voyages of Christopher Columbus by Washington Irving (in 4. Vol)

  • Publisher:  Paris, A. and W. Galignani

This was a scholarly but popular biography based primarily on the work of the Spanish historian Navarrete. Navarrete had published his work on Columbus, which contained a number of previously unknown and significant documents. However, Irving felt that “the whole presented rather a mass of rich materials for history, than a history itself.[and] the sight of disconnected papers and official documents is apt to be repulsive to the general reader, who seeks for clear and continued narrative.” In fact, he felt that nearly every account had been incomplete while many important documents and manuscripts ignored. Thus, he hoped to offer a more rigorous and yet accessible account. Written while Irving was a diplomatic attaché in Spain (1826-29), “it was the most painstaking effort of Irving’s life, and it won him election to the ‘Real Academia de la Historia’, the friendship of Navarrete, and a literary reputation in Spain where the work is still quoted respectfully”

The adventures of Telemachus, the son of Ulysses by  François de Salignac de La Mothe-Fénelon

Originally published by Fenelon in 1699, this famous retelling of the Greek myth proved the authors undoing as the King of France took its content as a hidden criticism. English translation of Fénélon’s famous didactic novel, written for his student, the seven-year-old Duc de Bourgogne (grandson of Louis XIV and second in line to the throne). Published anonymously (and against the author’s intentions), it was widely perceived as a criticism of the King’s absolutist rule and was translated in many languages.

This work has been selected by scholars as being culturally important, and is part of the knowledge base of civilization as we know it.

The History of the World is one of the better known literary achievements of Sir Walter Raleigh. The bibliographic life of the History is as interesting as was the life of its author, filled with successes, pitfalls and controversy. Sir Walter Raleigh was a contemporary of Shakespeare and a favorite among the court of Elizabeth I. Not without enemies, Raleigh was also deeply mistrusted by Elizabeth’s successor James I, who imprisoned him for treason upon ascending the throne. It was during this 13 year confinement in the Tower of London (1603-1616) that Raleigh wrote his History of the World. The work was originally conceived as a five volume set covering ancient history to the present, though Raleigh only completed this first volume. On publication, it was perceived as a thinly veiled critique of kings and did not improve Raleigh’s standing in court. Once published, James had it immediately suppressed and subsequently issued with no title page, and therefore no authorial acknowledgement.
